What is D-Star?
D-STAR stands for 'Digital Smart Technologies for Amateur Radio', an digital radio system which and has been developed by the JARL (Japan Amateur Radio League). It carries efficiently compressed voice and data. The specification and documentation is availableto anyone, so the transmission system is allowed as defined by the ITU Radio Regulations.
D-Star enables you to transmit voice and other data directly via radio, or mixed via radio and the internet. Required are two-way radios equipped with D-Star options, for example Icom IC-E91 with UT-121, Icom IC-E92 or IC-E2820 with UT-123.

But now D-STAR operations are also possible with your computer at home: connected to an USB port the DV-Dongle can connect to an existing D-Star gateway. You can listen in to the traffic and participate in the radio traffic. An additional requirement is a headset (microphone, headphones) connected to the soundcard of the computer. PTT keying is done with the mouse, using the supplied application.

The DV-Dongle consists of a hardware with integrated Codec chip and a JAVA software application. This application works with Microsoft Windows XP or Vista, Mac OS X Leopard and several Linux distributions.
