The WSPRlite is a special test transmitter that sends a signal to a Worldwide network of receiving stations. When used with our web-based DXplorer system, it's a powerful new way to evaluate antenna performance. Going way beyond antenna modelling or antenna analyzers, this unique system allows you to see how your antenna is performing in its actual location and in real-time! This type of analysis has never been possible before.

Using a simple Windows or Android interface, you program the WSPRlite with your callsign, QTH locator. Once set up, the WSPRlite does not need the computer to operate. Just connect it to a USB power supply (e.g. mobile phone charger), press the "sync" button at the start of any even minute, and off it goes! WSPRlite will make regular transmissions that are automatically received by stations around the world. These stations send their reports to a central website where you can see where your signals are reaching within seconds. Even more fun is to leave your beacon running and monitors its performance using DXplorer on your smartphone or tablet. This is a great way to see how your station is doing when you are at work - or even on holiday!* Take a WSPRlite on your next business trip or cruise and see where it it being heard while you sit at the bar.

What makes our product unique is the ability to compare antennas and location. We use the WSPR data to generate a special metric, DX10. We recalculate your DX10 range (km) every 2 minutes. DX10 is a great system performance indicator! The best HF system will give the longest DX10 ranges. Because you can compare the DX10 ranges for two station in real-time, you can see which one is the best - and by how much. Along with real-time DX10 graphs we calculate a mean and maximum DX10 score for each station - very handy if you make changes to your antennas to see what the changes actually do!

For beam users we generate on-the-fly Great Circle maps that have colour-coded spot locations showing signal to noise ratios. If you are doing a comparison, you can easily see who got the furthest spots and who was strongest!

Hardware

WSPRlite is a self-contained propagation beacon transmitter. Once configured using a special Windows or Andriod app (third party LINUX and Mac support available at WSPRlite Facebook Group), WSPRlite only needs a USB power supply to operate (no need to tie up your computer). WSPRlite operates on 630**-160-80-60-40-30-20m. The unit contains filters for 30 m and 20 m operation. Operation on other bands requires band-specific lowpass filters. We can supply a kit with filters for 160-80-40m . WSPRlite has accurate digital power control over a 16 dB range to facilitate precise measurements of antenna performance differences. WSPRlite is a low power device at only 200 mW but because of the clever encoding of the WSPR signal it has the DX capability of a 1 KW SSB transmitter (80 W CW).

Software

The DXplorer website is designed to operate with WSPRlite. DXplorer provides you with antenna performance information and propagation information in a new easy-to-use format. DXplorer has been optimised for use on mobile devices. Use of DXplorer.net is free for any WSPR user but WSPRlite users access Premium facilities including detailed antenna comparisons.

Notes:

  1. Classic covers 630m to 20m.
  2. Classic includes filtering for 20m and 30m. Flexi requires band-specific lowpass filters.
  3. Once programmed, the unit can be run from most USB power sources - no PC required.

As soon as the WSPRlite Classic was launched, people asked us for more bands. The Classic has a hardware limitation on the maximum frequency. The Flexi required significant additional development work on the hardware and firmware to add five great new bands: 17m, 15m, 12m, 10m and 6m*.

WSPR continues to increase in popularity. Because of this, the chance of co-channel interference has risen. The WSPRlite Flexi's Interference Avoidance Algorithm uses statistical data on the frequency distribution of WSPR transmitters to helps it to pick frequencies that are more likely to be clear. Other improvements in the Flexi means that it uses a much higher proportion of the available WSPR spectrum - again helping to reduce the chances of interference to and from other WSPR users.

A powerful feature of all WSPRlites is their ability to run synchronised with other WSPRlites. By analysing synchronous data the measurement performance is vastly improved compared to other comparison methods as all the data is from simultaneous transmissions. To facilitate synchronous use, Flexi users can manually enter the frequency that they wish to use for each unit. This facility is only available with the Flexi.

WSPRlite Flexis are all soak tested in our factory to pre-age the TXCOs. They are then individually adjusted against a Rubidium standard. With these more accurate oscillators we have been able to increase the run time to 45 days. This facility is only available with the Flexi.

The WSPRlite Flexi has no internal filtering and thus the user will need to add filtering before use. We are working on a range of options and the first is our three-band lowpass filter PCB. This is sold as a bare board allowing you to implement your own filters. We offer a range of component kits for various bands. We will be introducing some more low pass filter options early next year.

Ideal for running your WSPRlite from a battery supply or "wall-wart", the WSPRlite Power Conditioner converts any 7 - 20 Volt DC supply into a super-clean quiet 5 Volt USB supply - perfect for your WSPRlite.

We use a linear regulator to avoid the noise problems so often associated with cheap switching regulators. Rated at 200 mA and with a re-settable fuse, the Power Conditioner will keep your WSPRlite happy - and safe too. The DC input is protected against voltage spikes by a special TVS diode and is provided with additional smoothing with a low-esr input capacitor. These features have been added in case you wish to use your WSPRlite in a mobile setting. Unlike simple chargers, we also condition the data lines to avoid unwanted noise affecting your WSPRlite.

The device is supplied with a PowerPole for the DC input and a standard USB output. It's ideal for running your WSPRlite at home or in the field! The PCB has M3 mounting holes (mounting hardware not supplied).

NOTE: this unit is not suitable for charging mobile phone or other devices.

USB Electronic Load to prevent power-bank low-current shut-down

USB battery packs are a convenient way of powering low power USB devices such as WSPRlite. Unfortunately many USB battery packs switch off (go into a sleep mode) if the current being drawn is too low. This means that your device works for a few minutes and then stops. Often just a few extra milliamps current draw will keep the battery pack alive. There are various circuits on the web that give a pulsed load which works with some battery packs - but unfortunately our tests have shown that such circuits don't work reliably with all battery packs.

Our solution is a variable electronic load. We have designed it to be very simple to use. Just plug it into your battery pack and increase the current until battery pack stays on reliably (6 - 150 mA). Depending on the current that your powered device takes that may be a little as a few milliamps. An on-board LED indicates if the battery pack is live. The load supports a standard USB data connection. USB plug and socket for easy in-line connection. Clear heat-shrink sleeving is provided to protect the unit in the field.

Easy to use

To use, just plug the Keep-alive load between your battery and item to be powered and adjust the blue potentiometer on the unit with a fine screwdriver. Set it fully clockwise at first (maximum current) and gradually decrease the current until the battery pack just cuts out. Then increase the current until the battery pack stays on reliably. That way you only draw just enough current for reliable operation - increasing the life of your battery.
